Government Response to large-scale and long-duration electricity storage is welcome

SSE Renewables welcomes the Government Response document on large scale and long-duration electricity storage, which further recognises the important role that home-grown long-duration electricity storage technologies can play in not only cost-effectively achieving net zero but in reducing the UK’s reliance on imported gas and contributing to security of supply.

Pumped storage hydropower remains the most mature and lowest-cost long-duration storage technology and our proposed Coire Glas project in the Scottish Highlands could deliver up to 1.3GW and 30GWh of storage by 2030, more than doubling the total amount of electricity storage capacity in Great Britain today.

We look forward to continuing to work closely with government who have confirmed that they will develop an appropriate policy framework by 2024 to help accelerate the deployment of long-duration storage.
